Lake Lila is one of the most scenic lakes in the Adirondacks (or anywhere really) and tucked up along the shore of Lila, Mount Frederica offers a big view. It's an easy 7 mile round trip to this overlook, the only catch is the Lake Lila access road. It's five and a half miles of rough gravel road to the parking area.
Directions | From Long Lake head towards Tupper Lake. After six miles turn on to the Sabattis Road. Continue for 7.5 miles past the Whitney Wilderness Headquarters until the Lake Lila road is seen on the right. That's where the fun begins. It's 5.5 miles on the gravel road to the lake lila parking area. In recent years this road has been very rough. |
Difficulty | Moderate. The road is easy to walk but it is a seven mile round trip. |
Family-Friendly | This hike is kid friendly. But it's a slow drive in and out. |
Winter | The Lake Lila road is closed in the winter (usually from early December thru mid-may). It would be possible to ski the 5.5 miles to the Lake Lila parking area and then proceed to mount Frederica but that would make for a nearly 20 mile round trip. Not for the faint of heart |
One Thing to Know | Lake Lila was the centerpiece of the Webb family's Lake Lila estate known as Nehasne. They had their own railroad station which, with a little exploring, can be located and seen. |
